The Cherry Grove Fishing Pier, built in the 1950s, has been an attraction that people travel many miles to visit since the moment it opened to the public. Back in the day, the pier was made from nothing but wood; even so, it remained a sight to behold. What makes it such a special part of Cherry Grove Beach (other than its breathtaking scenery, of course) is the fact that it is also locally-owned. In the 1960s, the Prince family built an inn adjacent to the pier; when the family realized that a large majority of their consumers were staying at their business to be close to the pier, they knew what they had to do. The pier was then purchased by the Prince family in 1965, along with the land around the it. The inn has since been turned into the Prince Resort at The Pier, which houses a breathtaking rooftop pool and the Ocean Grill, an iconic beach-front restaurant which looks over the pier and its gorgeous scenery.

Not only has it always been a legendary landmark, the Cherry Grove Pier is also home to thousands of memories that are cherished by all, although one fisherman in particular holds a special memory of this pier. In 1964, a world record tiger shark was caught by South Carolinian fisherman Walter Maxwell. The shark weighed in at almost 2,000 pounds and remains the only all-tackle world record in South Carolina.

The Cherry Grove Pier may be an iconic landmark today, but one must not forget the history that has made the pier so important to Cherry Grove Beach.
